Donation Bookmarks for Best Friends

Cayman and I have been pretty busy trying to get 25 handmade bookmarks made as a donation item for a local shop here in town. Now 25 doesn’t seem like much, but for someone who has never really crafted with this type of medium before (add in my need to be a perfectionist) it is very time-consuming.  All proceeds from donations gathered will be forwarded directly to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah.

Donation Bookmarks for Best Friends

There are so many wonderful organizations helping animals that it was hard to choose just one. However I picked this Society for a number of reasons. First and foremost because they are firmly committed to the animals in their care. They have been monumental in the animal right movement. They believe that every animal should be judged on its own merit. That every animal has value, and should be treated as such.  I was first made aware of Best Friends and their sanctuary when they stepped forward to help the dogs in the case of Michael Vick. These dogs had a horrific life in a dog fighting ring on his property.

A little background information of Best Friends:

The beginning of Best Friends

For so many animals, it was the beginning of a miracle. It was the 1980s. Shelters across America routinely killed cats and dogs as the primary method of handling unwanted pets. Around 17 million animals perished every year. Older, sick and problem animals were the first to go. Then, a group of friends began taking some of those “unadoptables” to a safe haven to heal. With proper care and patience, the vast majority of these animals found loving forever families. The remaining animals spent the rest of their days romping in the new sanctuary. That group of friends who cared so deeply about animals grew and flourished and became Best Friends Animal Society.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

At the heart of Best Friends is the Sanctuary, where, at any given time, about 1,700 animals are turning their lives around, receiving the medical help they need, and getting love and acceptance to help them overcome their past. While searching for their forever homes, they live in a scenic, healing environment among human and animal friends.

Best Friends owns nearly 3,700 acres, and lease another 17,000 acres of state and federal land. Nearly 30,000 people visit every year to meet the animals and tour what has become the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals.

Doing my small part

I realize that my time, effort, and supplies aren’t going to be recovered in my effort to collect donations. Also that I could have just given the money directly to Best Friends, so why didn’t I? Simply because it is also the visibility that Best Friends needs. By people reading the brief description of where their donation is going they will also become aware of Best Friends. It is all about getting the focus to the sanctuary, and the wonderful things they are doing.

I should be blogging more about my little buddy, and I will as I wrap up this project. Until then here is Cayman doing his part in helping with the Bookmarks!
